Announcement for Community Action for Mosquito Control – August 22, 2017

Announcement for Community Action for Mosquito Control – August 22, 2017

The Asian Tiger Mosquito (ATM) is present in Phillipsburg, Lopatcong, Pohatcong,  Alpha and Washington Borough.  This mosquito is an aggressive day-time biter that is capable of spreading several mosquito-borne diseases.   Asian tiger mosquitoes require small containers of standing water to develop from egg to adult. The easiest way to eliminate these mosquitoes is to get rid of standing water around your home.  The adults do not fly far, so if you are getting bit then there are containers very close by that are producing the mosquitoes.

Please help us help you.  Check your yards and neighborhoods for anything that holds water.  Dump the water from containers, such as buckets, kiddie pools, and plant saucers. Drain standing water from tarps and pool covers.   Recycle tires and other containers properly.  Bird baths and pet dishes should be scrubbed weekly to eliminate mosquito eggs.  The neighborhood clean-up initiatives taking place in Phillipsburg will help reduce mosquito populations.  The ATM can lay eggs in something as small as a bottle cap or even a potato chip bag!

Defend yourself from mosquito bites by wearing repellents and securing window and door screens.   Check the Centers of Disease Control website https://www.cdc.gov/zika/prevention/prevent-mosquito-bites.html for information about EPA approved repellents.   For more information please contact the Warren County Mosquito Control Commission at www.warrencountymosquito.org or call 908-453-3585
