Stephen Ellis is a lifelong resident of Phillipsburg. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1975. He holds Bachelors of Science in Recreation Services and a Masters Degree, with Honors, in Public Administration from Rutgers University. He was employed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection – State Park Service for 35 years. He most recently oversaw all of the State parks, forests and historic sites in the northern third of the State. The facilities were spread out over 150,000 acres and hosted over 2.5 million visitors annually.
During his tenure with the State Park Service, Stephen has been recognized many times for his work including receiving a Heroism Award from Governor Kean and a formal proclamation for his work at Liberty State Park after the tragic events of September 11th by Acting Governor DiFrancesco. He was also recognized by community groups during his career including receiving the Award for Outstanding Public Service from the NY/NJ Baykeeper and the Leadership Award from the Friends of Liberty State Park.
Stephen is married to Rebecca Williams-Ellis, a science teacher at Phillipsburg High School. He has 2 children, Emily Acadia and Benjamin Stephen. He is a member of Saint Philip and Saint James Catholic Church. In his spare time, Stephen coaches soccer with the Phillipsburg Youth Soccer Club and volunteers on the Phillipsburg Riverfront Heritage Trail committee. Stephen also serves as an assistant commissioner for the Phillipsburg Area Colts football program
