Phillipsburg Farmers’ Market Day to be Held August 18th

(Phillipsburg, NJ – August 10th, 2016) — The second annual Choose Healthy Warren County Phillipsburg Farmers’ Market Day will be held on Thursday, August 18th from 4:30pm to 7:30pm in Shappell Park.  Piazza Farms & Greenhouses will offer a variety of fruits and vegetables for purchase. The event will also include additional vendors, free samples, free cooking demonstrations, free door prizes, free health screenings, and free children’s activities and prizes. WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market vouchers will be accepted. The free concert, sponsored by the Town of Phillipsburg and the Phillipsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, part of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, will feature the local country band Crazy Hearts at 6:30 pm in Shappell Park.  This event is sponsored by Rutgers Cooperative Extension and the Warren County Health Department.

“We had a large turn out last year,” said Amy Brinton, of Rutgers Cooperative Extension SNAP-Ed.  “It’s great that we were able to work with the Phillipsburg Area Chamber of Commerce to hold the market day during one of the free summer concerts this year and we are expecting an even bigger crowd.  This event is a wonderful opportunity to bring healthy choices to the community in a fun way.  Between the fresh produce and our free samples and activities, it is truly an event for all ages.”

Phillipsburg Farmers’ Market Day is a part of the larger program Choose Healthy Warren County, which also includes an ongoing Healthy Menu Options program in Hackettstown and new 30-Minute Walking Paths at White Lake in Hardwick. These health initiatives are funded by Shaping NJ Healthy Communities, a grant program which is designed to help communities by “enhancing the built environment and developing policies to support healthy eating and active living.” The grant supports collaborations and projects which strive to “make the healthy choice the easy choice,” and its primary purposes are to encourage healthy environments, behaviors and policies within communities and to increase funding for local level primary prevention.
