Press Release – Sinkholes

Town of Phillipsburg Public Press Statement

For Immediate Release
February 17, 2026

The Town has declared a State of Local Emergency in response to the recent sinkholes occurring in several areas.

This declaration allows us to access additional resources and assistance more quickly, helping the Town respond, secure affected areas, and make necessary repairs as efficiently as possible. Please be assured that this step is proactive and administrative in nature and is intended to strengthen our ability to address conditions on the ground.

The Town of Phillipsburg is actively responding to a sinkhole that opened on Summit Avenue, near the intersection with Lewis Street. Emergency services, including Phillipsburg Police, Fire Department, and other first responders, are on site and have secured the area to ensure public safety.

All relevant town departments are working closely with contracted third-party experts, utility providers (including Aqua New Jersey where applicable), and engineering professionals to evaluate the situation, assess structural integrity, determine the cause, and develop a remediation plan. Initial assessments are underway, and we are prioritizing a thorough investigation to prevent further incidents and facilitate safe repairs.

Public Safety Information:
– Summit Avenue remains closed from Fillmore Street to Chambers Street.
– The intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street is fully closed.
– Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes. Please follow posted detours and signage.
– Pedestrians and residents in the vicinity should stay clear of the affected roadway for their safety.
– According to Aqua New Jersey representatives, water service has been restored to most affected homes, with full restoration expected shortly. Residents in the area may temporarily experience discolored (brown) water and reduced pressure as the system stabilizes; however, the water remains safe to drink.

No injuries have been reported in connection with this incident, and we are grateful for the swift response of our emergency personnel. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available through the Town’s official channels, including the Town of Phillipsburg Facebook page, town website (phillipsburgnj.org), and Phillipsburg Police Facebook page.

The safety of our residents and visitors remains our top priority. We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation during this time.

Thank you.
