Sink Hole Update – 2/20/2026 – 8:30am

Overnight crews successfully and safely removed the dump truck that had been engulfed by a sinkhole at the intersection of Lewis Street and Summit Avenue.
Repair crews remained on site throughout the night, continuing critical work to stabilize the area and address remaining issues at the intersection; which includes replacing the water main and backfilling the hole.
Electric service has been fully restored to the affected area.
Gas service is still out to the immediate area and is anticipated to be restore later today.
Water service has been restored to all homes in the impacted area, with the exception of approximately 10 residences. Crews are actively working to restore service to these remaining homes.
On-site support remains available for any homes still experiencing water issues or needing assistance. Residents requiring help are encouraged to contact local emergency services personnel or Phillipsburg Police officers present at the scene.
The site remains an active construction and repair zone, with safety as the top priority. The public is asked to respect all barriers, stay at a safe distance from ongoing repair operations, and avoid the area to allow crews to work safely and efficiently.
The intersection of Lewis Street and Summit Avenue continues to be closed, and motorists should use alternate routes.
