Town of Phillipsburg Provides Update on Summit Avenue Sink Hole Incident
PHILLIPSBURG, NJ – The Town of Phillipsburg continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of our residents following the roadway collapse and sinkhole incidents at the intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street.
We want to assure the community that this matter is being handled with the utmost care and urgency by all involved parties. Town officials, in coordination with utility providers including Aqua New Jersey and other relevant service companies, remain on site conducting thorough evaluations. Teams are actively assessing the affected utilities—including water mains and any other infrastructure—to determine the full scope of necessary repairs and the most effective path forward.
Initial assessments indicate that impacts have been isolated primarily to areas along Summit Avenue and immediately adjacent streets. Water service disruptions affecting a limited number of customers have been addressed where possible, and efforts are underway to ensure full restoration and stability. At this time, several residents remain without water service and a larger number are experiencing power outages; the Town is actively working with utility providers to address these impacts and assist affected households with immediate needs.
The intersection and surrounding roadways remain closed to ensure public safety while work progresses. We appreciate residents’ patience and cooperation as we work diligently to resolve the situation.
The Town is committed to transparent communication and will provide additional updates as new information becomes available. For the latest details, please monitor official channels including the Town of Phillipsburg Facebook page, the Phillipsburg Police Department Facebook page, or the Town website.
We thank our first responders, utility crews, and residents for their understanding during this time. The safety of our community remains our top priority, and we are taking every step to address this incident in the best possible manner.
